Barbara Walters apologizes for helping Assad aide
NEW YORK (AP) ? Barbara Walters is apologizing for trying to help a former aide to Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad land a job or get into college in the United States.
Sheherazad Jaafari is the daughter of the Syrian ambassador to the United States and a one-time press aide to Assad. Jaafari played a role in Walters' landing an interview with the Syrian president in December.
After the interview, Walters acknowledged sending letters to try to help Jaafari land a job or get into a college in the U.S. She says Jaafari asked for a job at ABC News, but Walters refused, saying it was a conflict of interest.
But Walters says she realizes the help she offered Jaafari was also a conflict and "I regret that."

'Project X' Star Oliver Cooper: How To Be A Dirtbag
MTV Movie Awards Best On-Screen Dirtbag nominee says dirtbags 'have to kick kittens.'

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — "Project X" star Oliver Cooper is no stranger to being a dirtbag. No, not in his real life — just on the big screen. In the Todd Philips-produced flick, Cooper takes on the role of Costa, who manages to burn down a neighborhood, betray all of his friends, steal from a drug dealer and even put someone in an oven.
Yet, some good came out of portraying such a terrible character: The role earned Cooper two MTV Movie Awards nominations, including one for the inaugural Best On-Screen Dirtbag award.
Cooper is thrilled to be nominated for the award, going so far as to actively campaign for fan votes to ensure his victory in winning the Golden Popcorn.
When MTV News caught up with Cooper earlier this week outside the Gibson Amphitheatre, home of the Movie Awards, we were curious to find out just what it takes to be the ultimate dirtbag. Not surprisingly, Cooper had all the answers.
How to be a Dirtbag:
1. Have No Regard for Your Friends
The first rule to being a dirtbag is to completely disregard your friends' feelings. If you need some guidance, pay close attention to Cooper's character in "Project X."
2. Dislike Animals — Especially Kittens
Yes, this sounds insane. How can anyone really hate kittens? Well, if you're a dirtbag, you probably do. "Hate animals," Cooper said. "You have to kick kittens when you see them, steal their food when they're not looking."
3. Don't Have Kids
According to Cooper, dirtbags "never want to have kids." We really aren't sure why, but we think if you're a dirtbag, you might understand.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Richard Dawson, the wisecracking British entertainer who was among the schemers in the 1960s sitcom "Hogan's Heroes" and a decade later began kissing thousands of female contestants as host of the game show "Family Feud" has died. He was 79.
Dawson, also known to TV fans as the Cockney POW Cpl. Peter Newkirk on "Hogan's Heroes," died Saturday night from complications related to esophageal cancer at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, his son Gary said.
The game show, which initially ran from 1976 to 1985, pitted families who tried to guess the most popular answers to poll questions such as "What do people give up when they go on a diet?
He made his hearty, soaring delivery of the phrase "Survey says..." a national catchphrase among viewers.
Dawson won a daytime Emmy Award in 1978 as best game show host. Tom Shales of The Washington Post called him "the fastest, brightest and most beguilingly caustic interlocutor since the late great Groucho bantered and parried on 'You Bet Your Life.'" The show was so popular it was released as both daytime and syndicated evening versions.
His swaggering, randy style (and British accent) set him apart from other TV quizmasters. He was known for kissing each woman contestant, and at the time the show bowed out in 1985, executive producer Howard Felsher estimated that Dawson had kissed "somewhere in the vicinity of 20,000."
"I kissed them for luck and love, that's all," Dawson said at the time.
One of them he kissed was Gretchen Johnson, a young contestant who appeared with members of her family in 1981. After a decade together, she and Dawson wed in 1991. They had a daughter, Shannon.
Dawson reprised his game show character in a much darker mood in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film "The Running Man," playing the host of a deadly TV show set in a totalitarian future, where convicts try to escape as their executioners stalk them. "Saturday Night Live" mocked him in the 1970s, with Bill Murray portraying him as leering and nasty, even slapping one contestant (John Belushi) for getting too fresh.
The British-born actor already had gained fame as the fast-talking Newkirk in "Hogan's Heroes," the CBS comedy that starred Bob Crane and mined laughs from a Nazi POW camp whose prisoners hoodwink their captors and run the place themselves.
Despite its unlikely premise, the show made the ratings top 10 in its first season, 1965-66, and ran until 1971.
"We ran six years," Dawson once quipped, "a year longer than Hitler."
Both "Hogan's Heroes" and "Family Feud" have had a second life in recent years, the former on DVD reissues and the latter on GSN, formerly known as the Game Show Network.
On Dawson's last "Family Feud" in 1985, the studio audience honored him with a standing ovation, and he responded: "Please sit down. I have to do at least 30 minutes of fun and laughter and you make me want to cry."
"I've had the most incredible luck in my career," he told viewers, adding, "I never dreamed I would have a job in which so many people could touch me and I could touch them." That triggered an unexpected laugh.
Producers brought out "The New Family Feud," starring comedian Ray Combs, in 1988. Six years later, Dawson replaced Combs at the helm, but that lasted only one season. Steve Harvey is the current host.
Dawson was born Colin Lionel Emm in 1932 in Gosport, England. When he was 14 he joined the Merchant Marines, serving three years.
He first got into show business as a stand-up comedian, playing clubs in London's West End including the legendary Stork Room. It was there, in the late 1950s, he met blond bombshell Diana Dors, the film star who became known as Britain's answer to Marilyn Monroe. They married in 1959 and divorced in the late 1960s.
Dawson landed roles in U.S. comedy and variety shows in the early 1960s, including "The Steve Allen Show" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show." Then his performance as a military prisoner in the 1965 film "King Rat" led to his being cast in "Hogan's Heroes," which truly made him a star to American audiences.
After that, he was a regular on "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In" and "The New Dick Van Dyke Show."
Meanwhile, he became a frequent celebrity contestant on game shows, including both daytime and prime-time versions of "The Match Game."
While still a panelist on "The Match Game," he began hosting "Family Feud," where his popularity grew to such levels that he was mentioned as a frontrunner to win the "Tonight Show" host chair to succeed Johnny Carson, who at the time was considering retirement. Though Carson stayed put, Dawson made appearances as a guest host.
Dawson is survived by his widow, Gretchen, their daughter Shannon, two sons, Mark and Gary, from his first marriage, and four grandchildren.

Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control.?
Cancer is always named for the part of the body where it starts, even if it spreads to other body parts later.
When cancer starts in the ovaries, it is called ovarian cancer.? Women have two ovaries that are located in the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus.? The ovaries make female hormones and produce eggs.
The ovaries are the part of the female reproductive system that produce eggs every month during a woman?s reproductive years. They are located on either side of the lower abdomen. Ovarian cancer occurs when cells in the ovary grow and divide uncontrollably. The cells may form a tumor on the ovary, or they also can break off from the main tumor and spread to other parts of the body. Although ovarian cancer can spread throughout the entire body, in most cases it stays in the abdomen and affects organs such as the intestines, liver and stomach. There are several types of ovarian cancer. However, most cancers of the ovary come from the cells that make up the outer lining of the ovary.
How common is ovarian cancer?
A woman?s risk of getting ovarian cancer during her lifetime is about one in 67. The risk of getting this cancer and dying from it is one in 95. Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer in women, excluding skin cancer. It is the fifth leading cause of cancer death in women.
When ovarian cancer is found in its early stages, treatment is most effective.?
There is no way to know for sure if you will get ovarian cancer.? Most women get it without being at high risk.?
However, there are several factors that may increase the chance that you will get ovarian cancer, including if you:
? Are middle-aged or older.
? Have close family members (such as your mother, sister, aunt, or grandmother) on either your mother?s or your father?s side who have had ovarian cancer.
? Have had breast, uterine, or colorectal cancer.
? Have an Eastern European (Ashkenazi) Jewish background.
? Have never given birth or have had trouble getting pregnant.
? Have endometriosis (a condition where tissue from the lining of the uterus grows elsewhere in the body).
If you have one or more of these factors, it does not mean you will get ovarian cancer.? But you should speak with your doctor about your risk.
How is ovarian cancer diagnosed?
Many times women with ovarian cancer have no symptoms or just mild symptoms until the disease is in an advanced stage. Ovarian cancer is difficult to diagnose and is often diagnosed after the disease is advanced. Some diagnostic exams and tests that may be useful are:
Pelvic exam - includes feeling the uterus, vagina, ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder and rectum to find any abnormality in their shape or size.
Ultrasound - uses high-frequency sound waves. These waves are aimed at the ovaries and produce a pattern of echoes to create a picture (sonogram). Healthy tissues, fluid-filled cysts and tumors look different on this picture.
CA-125 assay - a blood test used to measure the level of CA-125, a tumor marker that is often found in higher-than-normal amounts in the blood of women with ovarian cancer as well as other cancers.
Lower Gastrointestinal series or barium enema - a series of X-rays of the colon and rectum. The pictures are taken after the patient is given an enema with a white, chalky solution containing barium. The barium outlines the colon and rectum making tumors or other abnormal areas easier to see.
Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) scan - a series of detailed pictures of the organs inside the body created by a computer linked to an X-ray machine.
Biopsy - the removal of tissue for examination under a microscope. A definitive diagnosis of ovarian cancer requires surgery. The initial surgery has two purposes. First, to remove any cancer that exists (or as much as possible), including removing the ovaries and the uterus; and second, to sample tissues and surrounding lymph nodes to determine where the tumor has spread and the stage of the disease. The best prognosis for survival occur when all the cancer can be removed.

Assad: Syria faces 'real war waged from the outside'

Syrian President Bashar Assad has said that his country is engaged in a "real war" with outside forces and denied any role in the Houla massacre, which he said was carried by ?monsters?.
In his first public address since January, he warned he would not be lenient on those he blamed for violence in the country, and promised that a 15-month-old crisis would end soon if Syrians pulled together.
In a speech to parliament, he repeated many of his earlier pledges to maintain a crackdown on opponents he describes as terrorists implementing a foreign conspiracy, while offering dialogue with those opposition figures who have avoided armed conflict or outside backing.
He made his comments a day after international envoy Kofi Annan said the spectre of all-out civil war was growing daily in Syria and the world needed to see actions, not words, from Assad.
Jim Muir, the BBC correspondent in Beirut, said: ?Anybody hoping that President Assad's first public speech since January might open up some lines of advance towards a solution will have been disappointed.?
In his hour-long address, Assad offered no specific response to Annan's plea for bold steps to end the conflict.
Thousands of people have been killed in a crackdown on protests against Assad, which erupted in March last year and have become increasingly militarised, destabilising neighbouring Lebanon and raising fears of regional turmoil.
"This crisis is not an internal crisis. It is an outside war carried out by inside elements," Assad said, looking relaxed as he spoke to parliamentarians. "If we work together, I confirm that the end to this situation is near."
'True monstrosities'
Last month's massacre in Houla of 108 people, mostly women and children, triggered global outrage and warnings that Syria's relentless bloodshed - undimmed by Annan's April 12 ceasefire deal - could engulf the Middle East.
Sunni Muslim powers, particularly wealthy Gulf Arab states, have strongly supported the uprising against Assad, an Alawite closely allied with Shi'ite Iran and Hezbollah.
Western powers have accused Syrian armed forces and pro-Assad militia of responsibility for the May 25 Houla killing, a charge Damascus has denied.
Despite the discovery of another atrocity following the recent massacre in Huola, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad showed no sign of relinquishing his power. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.
"What happened in Houla...and what we described as ugly and abominable massacres, or true monstrosities - even monsters do not perpetrate what we have seen," Assad said.
He said his country was facing a war waged from outside and that terrorism was escalating despite political steps including last month's election for parliament, whose new members Assad was addressing.
"We are not facing a political problem because if we were this party would put forth a political programme. What we are facing is (an attempt) to sow sectarian strife and the tool of this is terrorism," Assad said.
"The issue is terrorism. We are facing a real war waged from the outside," Assad said.
Annan, the joint United Nations and Arab League envoy for Syria, told an Arab League meeting in Qatar on Saturday that Assad must make "bold and visible" steps immediately to change his military stance and honour his commitment to cease all violence.
Annan criticised Assad for failing to comply with a peace plan to end the conflict and said his forces were carrying out atrocities, arbitrary arrests and other abuses.
The United Nations says Syrian forces have killed more than 9,000 people in a crackdown on protests against Assad. Syria blames the violence on foreign-backed Islamist militants it says have killed more than 2,600 soldiers and security force members.

There's some good news behind the discouraging headlines on the economy: Gas is getting cheaper. At least two states had stations selling gas for $2.99 on Friday and it could fall below $3 in more areas over the weekend.
A plunge in oil prices has knocked more than 30 cents off the price of a gallon of gas in most parts of the U.S. since early April. The national average is now $3.61. Experts predict further decline in the next few weeks.

If Americans spend less filling their tanks, they'll have more money for discretionary purchases. The downside? Lower oil and gas prices are symptoms of weakening economic conditions in the U.S. and around the globe.
On Friday, oil prices plunged nearly 4 percent as a bleak report on U.S. job growth heightened worries about a slowing global economy and waning oil demand. The unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent. Sobering economic news from China and Europe also contributed to the drop.
West Texas Intermediate, the benchmark for oil in the U.S, fell $3.30, or 3.7 percent, to $83.23 per barrel, the lowest price since early October. The drop adds to a 17 percent decline in May.
U.S. drivers should feel some relief, even if they're worried about jobs. Auto club AAA says pump prices fell nearly 5 percent in May, the largest monthly percentage drop since November. Some station owners in South Carolina on Friday even presented drivers with a gift at the start of summer driving season: $2.99 gas.
Dan Durbin, president of R.L. Jordan Oil Co., says low wholesale prices allowed at least seven of the company's Hot Spot stations in Spartanburg, S.C., to lower the price to $2.99 per gallon. South Carolina also has the lowest gas tax in the nation.
Durbin predicted that more of his stations and some competitors will lower prices once they sell off higher-priced supplies currently in their tanks.
Gas also fell below $3 in Harrisonburg, Va. It could hit $2.99 or lower in Georgia, Missouri and Oklahoma perhaps as soon as this weekend, according to Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at Oil Price Information Service.
Gas hasn't been below $3 per gallon anywhere in at least two months.
Analyst Patrick DeHaan of the website GasBuddy.com expects prices to fall below $3 a gallon soon in Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, which benefit from proximity to refining hubs.
Kloza predicts that motorists will pay an average of about $3.50 per gallon or lower by Father's Day. And drivers on the West Coast should see even bigger declines than other parts of the country. Their prices had been rising because of a gas shortage.
Gas prices should stabilize in July and August, Kloza says.
It's still questionable how much lower gas prices will boost consumer confidence.
Phil Flynn, an analyst for The Price Futures Group, believes falling gas prices could give consumers a psychological boost. But that could evaporate if hiring doesn't pick up and stock markets keep swooning.
"If you don't have a job, it doesn't matter if gasoline prices are $5 or $2 a gallon," he said.
Those who can afford a new car payment will appreciate falling gas prices. Automakers reported selling 1.3 million cars and trucks in May. Auto sales remain a bright spot in the U.S. economy. Still, those sales won't reverse a decline in gas demand in the U.S. because the new models are more fuel efficient than older ones heading to the scrap heap.
