There is always room for dessert, say the girl with the extra dessert stomach. That't me in a nutshell, I love desserts and always on the lookout for new places. So when I heard about?Theirry opened by the renown Cin Cin dessert chef Thierry Busset, I was more than willing to give it a try.

I leisurely strolled the streets of?down town?after attending a seminar on a Monday afternoon, thinking that the dessert shop should be pretty empty consider the time and day, but I was wrong. The place was pretty packed at around 3pm.

The decor was very nice with these water drop lamps and modern wooden cabinets and walls. The menu was simple, you can order dessert and macaroons first or go straight to the end for drink. Overall, we both love the look and feel of this place.
For our drinks, R got a Americano, which he thought was robust and very strong. I got the Elderflower/apple soda ($3.95). It was like drinking carbonated apple juice that is sweeter than usual.?
I ordered a Passion Fruit Mousse ($5.95). The flavor was intense and real. In fact the gel on top was really sour. The raspberry macaroons on the side were quite sweet, so if you take a bite of both mousse and macaroon, it was just a perfect combination.?
R chose the next dessert: Chocolate Succe Cake ($6.95)?consisting?layer of hazelnut meringue, chocolate mousse and 70% chocolate ganache. The dark chocolate shell on the outside was pretty hard, which contrasted with the smooth/soft ganache on the inside. The whole thing is a chocolate lover's heaven, so naturally R loved it more than me. I still prefer my fruity tasting dessert.

Of course I couldn't leave the place without buying some of their famous macaroons. Half a dozen costed me about $12.95. I brought it home to share it with everyone, but we were all fairly disappointed. It was as sweet as expected, but it lacked the?flavour?to match its vibrant?colour. Also it seems they used quite a lot of dye to get the?colour.?

Overall, I think Thierry do have quality desserts, but I would skip over their macaroons if you are not a fan of sweet stuff. If you need a place to meet up with a friend over coffee, then this place is perfect. :)

Bristol-Myers pushes blockbuster cancer drug prospect into ASCO ...

When Bristol-Myers Squibb ($BMY) agreed to buy up Medarex for $2.4 billion three years ago, everyone was focused on the fate of ipilimumab, the melanoma antibody treatment that would ultimately go on to a celebrated approval as Yervoy. But BMS also laid claim to another antibody--BMS-936558, partnered with Ono Pharmaceuticals--in the buyout. And the big biotech company now has high hopes of making this the latest pearl to add to its string of ASCO jewels.

While Yervoy revved up the bodies' T cells to attack cancer, BMS-936558 zeroes in on a cellular switch identified as PD-1, a facilitator for cancer cells attempting to evade destruction by the immune system. In an in-depth feature from Bloomberg's Robert Langreth, the company lays out plans to add to its portfolio of data as it moves the treatment to center stage at the upcoming ASCO meeting in Chicago. And it's earning some rave reviews among analysts tracking the drug.

"It is the early stage of a whole new field of cancer therapy," Seamus Fernandez, an analyst at Leerink Swann, tells Bloomberg. Fernandez estimates that the drug, a likely combo therapy that could go on to treat a number of cancers, could earn as much as $4 billion a year for BMS, which recently expanded its marketing rights to the treatment.

The preliminary data has been intriguing. Initial data indicates that the antibody shrunk tumors in a significant minority of melanoma patients, as well as groups of lung and kidney cancer victims. And BMS is aggressively planning a slate of late-stage studies to leapfrog its way to a potential blockbuster approval.

"After many years of negative studies, the idea of reactivating the immune system against cancer seems to be paying off," Yale's Roy Herbst tells Langreth.

BMS isn't alone in the field. It will race against Merck, GlaxoSmithKline and Teva, which have their own PD-1 programs in the clinic.

Families herded "like sheep" to die in Houla massacre

AMMAN (Reuters) - The gunmen arrived shortly before dusk, some in uniform and some in plain clothes, before herding whole families into rooms and killing them in cold blood, according to survivors.

"They entered our homes ... men wearing fatigues herding us like sheep in the room and started spraying bullets at us," said an apparently injured woman in a video released by activists.

"My father died and my brother, my mother's only son. Seven sisters were killed," the woman said, lying next to another injured woman and near a baby with a chest wound.

The United Nations says 108 people were killed in the May 25 massacre, nearly half of them children, outraging a world long numbed by 14 months of relentless bloodshed since the start of a popular uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The events are disputed. The West blames Assad's forces, while Syria accuses its opponents, whom it refers to as Islamist "terrorists".

But video footage and accounts of activists, survivors, rights groups and United Nations observers in Syria, provide a harrowing narrative of the violence in the Houla region, about 20 km (13 miles) northwest of the city of Homs.

Crucially, the U.N. monitors say the evidence appears to contradict the government's denial that its forces and allied militia were behind the slayings.

Activists and survivors said soldiers and pro-Assad "shabbiha" militiamen from the president's minority Alawite sect carried out the onslaught on the Sunni Muslim villagers.

"They are all shabbiha of Assad. They came to us from (the nearby villages of) Fela and Sharklia. They are Alawite pigs. They attacked us and said 'die you pigs' and left," said the unidentified woman in the video, swathed in a blanket and wearing a black headscarf.

It is far from the first mass killing in Syria. But the presence on the ground of U.N. monitors - and their forthrightness in describing it as a massacre of mostly women and children - has made the incident a potential turning point in the effort to galvanize international opinion against Assad.

U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said 49 children and 34 women were among those killed, while fewer than 20 people had died in bombardment.

"What is very clear is that this was an absolutely abominable event that took place in Houla, and at least a substantial part of it were summary executions of civilians - women and children," Colville said.

FRIDAY PRAYERS

Like many confrontations in Syria, the violence began with protests against Assad's rule at Friday prayers in the village of Taldaou, and quickly spilled into bloodshed and clashes.

Activists said security forces fired on the demonstrators, killing several people. Free Syrian Army rebels attacked army checkpoints around the mainly Sunni villages of the Houla district, seizing control of at least one.

Up to five government armored vehicles, including tanks, were damaged in the fighting, testimony to the increasing firepower at the rebels' disposal.

"In late afternoon, Taldaou came under heavy tank shelling and rocket fire," said activist Maysara al-Hilawi, who said he had witnessed Friday's events. "A number of people were killed, and the rebels withdrew."

He said shabbiha militiamen from outlying Alawite villages entered Taldaou at around 6 p.m., under covering army fire.

According to Hilawi and witnesses interviewed by Human Rights Watch, many of the killings occurred on the southern fringe of Taldaou on a road leading southwards to the Alawite villages and a dam.

Hilawi said he had ventured out into the streets of Taldaou at around 8.30 p.m. "I found lots of people massacred in their homes on the dam road leading to the Alawite villages.

"Those who tried to escape were machinegunned and the bodies of nine men and six women who ran away were found today among the farmlands. There are more bodies of victims near roadblocks which we cannot reach."

He said 63 people from a single extended family of Sunnis called Abdelrazzaq were killed in their houses.

BLOODIED CORPSES

"The shabbiha came back at 2.30 in the morning and killed more than 15 people from the al-Sayyed family in their houses. A baby, Ali Adel al-Sayyed, miraculously survived," Hilawi said, referring to another family of Sunnis.

Several videos of the aftermath show bloodied corpses of men, women and children.

"That's Firas," screams a man in one clip, turning over the corpse of a man whose skull appears to be partially detached, a thick pool of blood beneath him.

Other footage and pictures posted on the day of the killings showed a child with its throat slit, with what appear to be burn marks near what may be an entrance wound on the upper rib cage.

Another showed a girl, apparently shot in the right eye, blood soaking the right side of her clothing.

Western leaders expressing outrage over the killings have focused on the plights of children. In another video circulated on the Internet, a child described what he said had happened.

"The soldiers came in. My mother started shouting at them for taking my brother and my uncles. They pointed their guns at her head and shot her five times," the boy said.

The boy said a soldier found his hiding place and shot at him, "but the bullet landed at my side."

"There were 11 of them - some in uniform and some civilians with shaved heads and beards - Shabbiha.... I left the house trembling, I saw the bodies of my sister, my mother and my brothers on the bed. I saw them all."

Syrian authorities restrict media access and it is impossible to verify videos posted by activists who seek to portray Assad's forces in the worst possible light. Some people shown in the videos appeared to have been prompted for their answers.

In a letter to the United Nations, the government denied any tanks had been in the area and said the killings bore the hallmarks of Islamist militants whom the government has long blamed for the violence in Syria. It said the victims had been chosen because they had publicly declared support for Assad.

That account challenged what U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the Security Council on Sunday, citing U.N. observers who saw artillery and tank shells, as well as fresh tank tracks, along with many buildings destroyed by heavy weapons.

The U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva said most of the 108 dead were civilians and that witnesses and survivors had told U.N. investigators that most were victims of two bouts of summary executions carried out by shabbiha.

U.N. peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous also said the weaponry used pointed to the army, and the shabbiha were "probably" responsible for the killings.

"Part of the victims had been killed by artillery shells. Now that points ever so clearly to the responsibility of the government. Only the government has heavy weapons, has tanks, has howitzers," he told reporters in New York.

"But there are also victims from individual weapons, victims from knife wounds and that of course is less clear but probably points the way to the shabbihas, the local militia," he said.

McGill university student plan provides healthcare to rural areas with Windows Phone and Win 8

Those of us living in metropolitan areas don't think twice about our ease of access to medical care, but those in rural areas don't enjoy such easy access to a doctor. Abhijeet Kalyan and Shravan Narayan from McGill University in Canada are aware of this problem, and came up with a way for doctors to diagnose and treat patients from afar. Called Project Neem, it's got a hub and spoke organizational structure that puts a healthcare worker in every village and leverages the power of Windows Phone to connect them with medical staff in distant cities.

Participating healthcare workers are given basic medical training and a handheld loaded up with a custom app that identifies patients by scanning their national ID card and stores their pertinent medical info -- from temperature and blood pressure readings to a variety of symptoms. The app has a virtual human body on board that lets users tap parts of the anatomy to bring up a series of symptoms that can be selected to provide treating physicians with the info they need. That information is stored in the cloud and accessed by doctors through a Windows 8 app, who then can relay appropriate treatments to the local healthcare worker. Now all we need is someone to make a real-world tricorder, and we'll truly be able to bring medical care to the masses, wherever they may be.

Spelling Bee: The final 50 will compete for $30,000

The youngest competitor this year is 6-year old Lori Anne Madison. The winner of the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee gets $30,000 in cash. Second place: $2,500.

In his fifth and final National Spelling Bee, Nicholas Rushlow had little reason to be nervous.

The 14-year-old eighth grader from Pickerington, Ohio, strutted confidently to the microphone in a preliminary round on Wednesday morning, high-fiving a fellow competitor who'd just missed a word. After greeting pronouncer Jacques Bailly and asking for the definition of "Gabbai" ? a minor synagogue official ? he spelled it with ease and gave a smile and a nod.

Rushlow has made it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee every year since 2008, although he's never made the finals. His best showing was a 14th-place finish last year. This is his last chance. Next year, he'll be too old.

While Rushlow was clearly at ease, the speller before him, Veto Lopez, exemplified how agonizing the competition can be. He paused for several seconds before starting to spell "blase," then stopped even longer in the middle of the word, cracking his knuckles and glancing at the television lights above him, before misspelling it.

There are 278 spellers participating in the preliminary rounds, and each will spell two words onstage Wednesday. Their scores are combined with a 50-word computer test they took Tuesday, and no more than 50 will advance to Thursday's semifinals. The finals are Thursday night.

The winner of the 85th Scripps National Spelling Bee gets $30,000 in cash, a trophy, a $2,500 savings bond, a $5,000 scholarship, $2,600 in reference works from the Encyclopedia Britannica and an online language course.

Although spellers aren't automatically eliminated for missing a word onstage during the preliminary rounds, it's all but impossible to advance without getting both words right.

Among those who got through the first word unscathed: 6-year-old Lori Anne Madison of Lake Ridge, Va., the youngest speller ever to qualify for the bee. She spelled "dirigible" with apparent ease after asking for the definition and hearing it used in a sentence. On the way back to her seat, she shared high-fives with several spellers.

Two of last year's finalists got through tough words: Nabeel Rahman of Buffalo, N.Y., spelled "coloratura" ? a word for florid decorations in vocal music ? and Arvind Mahankali of Bayside Hills, N.Y., got "garibaldi" ? a loose blouse inspired by an Italian revolutionary leader.

Samuel Estep of Berryville, Va., also a finalist last year, spelled "tahini."

Among the words that tripped up spellers Wednesday morning: "limpid," ''dragoon" and "maraud." Twenty-five words were misspelled in the morning round.

Displays of emotion were mostly muted, but Reid FitzHugh of Rockville, Md., clenched both fists after getting "ocarina," a flute-like instrument. Michael Reiner of Salem, Ohio, struggled with the pronunciation of "fete" before spelling it correctly and gave an emphatic fist pump before rolling his wheelchair away from the microphone. And Lena Greenberg of Philadelphia sprinted back to her chair and buried her face in her hands after spelling "jong," a South African word for friend.

Spellers admit there's some luck involved in the early rounds. Coralee LaRue, 11, of Vineyard Haven, Mass., felt relieved to be given "inviolable" and spelled it confidently. LaRue had finished second in her regional bee two years running before making the national bee this year.

But she wasn't as thrilled with the computer test as with her experience on stage.

"That was hard. There were a few that I just hadn't heard before," LaRue said. "Some, I just had to guess."

3 Home Improvement Projects You Can Do With Your Kids

Following are a few home improvement projects that are perfect to do with your kids.

1. Clean out the Gutters Don't get us wrong--we're not suggesting that you put your child up on the roof. But there are plenty of ways that your kids can help you with the monotonous chore of cleaning out the gutters. First, have your child help you walk around the house and check the gutters for spots that are rusty, loose, or look as though they're crooked. These are the areas of your gutters that you'll most likely want to repair at a later date.

When it's time for you to climb up on the ladder and get to work scooping out that gutter muck, ask your child to stay on the ground and put the debris that you scoop out of the gutters into a garbage bag.

2. Work on some gardening Gardening is a great way to include your kids in a home improvement project. Go the extra step and have your kids help you create a garden just for them. First, sit down and talk to your kids about what types of things they'd like to plant. Do they want to stick to flowers and vegetation, or would they like to plant some vegetables? Have the kids help you sketch out a plan for what the garden will include.

Once the plans are made, it's time to begin clearing some space outside for the garden. With your children's help, till the soil in your chosen spot and then get going planting the seeds. Explain to your kids the importance of watering the plants regularly and of weeding the garden. They're sure to be proud of themselves and of their garden when it's time to pick the veggies or when the flowers bloom.

3. Paint a room Painting is one of the best home improvement projects for kids to help out with. You can begin getting your children involved from the start by having them help you pick out the ideal paint color for whatever room you plan on painting. Once it's time to begin the actual painting process, dress your child in some old clothes and set him or her up with a roller. They're sure to have a blast helping you paint! This is particularly fun for kids if you're painting their room. They'll have a feeling of pride in their work once the job is completed.

These are just three home improvement projects that you can easily do with the help of your little ones. What other projects can you think of that kids can help out with?

(AP) ? Residents of this remote hamlet that lacks running water and electricity, and lives off cattle ranching and coca-growing were preparing a barbeque for Wednesday's planned handover of a French journalist by Colombia's main leftist rebel group.

Village council leader German Pena said more than 1,000 people were expected for the event, for which villagers built a wooden platform with fresh cut logs and planks.

"We killed six cows and two horses. We heard the French eat horse meat," Pena joked.

French journalist Romeo Langlois, 35, was taken by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia on April 28 when it attacked troops he was accompanying on a cocaine-lab eradication mission, killing three soldiers and a police officer.

He was wounded in the left arm but video images of him said to have been taken the day of his capture and broadcast Monday as a first "proof-of-life" showed him looking relaxed as his arm was sutured and a female guerrilla asked him questions.

Langlois has covered Colombia for more than a decade and was on assignment for France24 television. He has also contributed to the newspaper Le Figaro.

He was to be delivered to a commission including the International Red Cross, former Colombian Sen. Piedad Cordoba and French government delegate Jean-Baptiste Chauvin, who arrived Tuesday night in the Caqueta state capital of Florencia.

It's a roughly seven-hour drive from Florencia to San Isidro on rutted dirt roads that in the current rainy weather develop watery pits that can easily mire four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Reporters with international news organizations invited to cover the handover shared San Isidro's single, partially paved street on Tuesday with small groups of rebels, clad in olive green combat fatigues and carrying assault rifles. The rebels made small purchases at stores or stopped to chat with villagers.

They declined to provide details of the planned handover, saying they were not authorized to comment.

This region of southern Colombia is a stronghold of the FARC, as the rebels are known by their Spanish initials. It is laced with deep jungles, coca plots, fast-moving rivers and villages that appear on no maps.

"War is something we experience almost every day," said Pena. "There have been innumerable battles in this area. We've seen bullets flying on the main street of the village."

The hamlet of about 100 families is 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the larger village of Union Peneya, administrative center of a municipality near where Langlois was captured.

Some of the villagers doing the communal preparation for Wednesday's handover expressed fears they could be targeted by the army for reprisal, accused of collaborating with the guerrillas.

"They think we're part of the guerrilla forces just because we live in this region and for that reason they target us sometimes," said Pena.

At mid-afternoon on Tuesday, a white Russian-made Mi-17 helicopter flew over San Isidro.

Colombia's defense minister, Juan Carlos Pinzon, said the military would suspend operations in the zone for 48 hours beginning Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The FARC, which took up arms in 1964 and which authorities say funds itself largely through the cocaine trade, has an estimated 9,000 fighters. It has recently stepped up hit-and-run attacks on soldiers and police after suffering years of setbacks from Colombia's U.S.-backed military.

The rebels announced in February that they were ending ransom kidnapping, a good-faith gesture made in hopes of launching peace talks.

The FARC released last month what it called its last "political prisoners," 10 soldiers and police it had held for as long as 14 years.

The rebels said in a communique on May 6 that they took Langlois prisoner in part because he was wearing military garb.

The journalist was wearing a bullet proof vest and helmet issued by the military, Pinzon has said, adding that he discarded them during the morning-long firefight with the guerrillas.

Can you train yourself to be an optimist?

Catherine de Lange, contributor

Rainy-Brain---jacket.jpgCognitive psychologist Elaine Fox from the University of Essex, UK, explores the ways in which we can retrain our brains to view the world with a positive outlook in her book Rainy Brain, Sunny Brain. New Scientist asked her why some people see the glass as half empty, and what techniques science offers us to change that perspective.

What makes someone more prone to optimism or a pessimism?
At the very core of who we are are cognitive biases, ways of processing the information in the world around us that are automatically going on outside of our awareness. So some people are tuning in to negative information at a very subtle level and other people are tuning into positive information.

Do we do this all the time?
Yes. If you walk into a room and people laugh and then say "Hello", somebody who is socially anxious will think that people are laughing at them, and will make some negative interpretation. Someone else might think, ?They?re pleased to see me?. So the same information can be interpreted in quite different ways. That?s something quite fundamental and it leads to the longer term states of your mindset.

So these biases predispose us to having a particular outlook - but where do they come from in the first place?
We know that we aren?t born into the world as blank slates - we already have some tendencies, and fear and pleasure are great motivators. When we come into the world our brain automatically tunes into things that might harm us or benefit us, and there are individual differences to how people respond. We know that there are different genes and chemical systems involved in pleasure and fear responses.

Are we born destined to become either optimists or pessimists?
No, quite the opposite. Genes are involved in that, but it?s how genes and the environment come together that determines these brain states. One thing that?s come out of the research is that these brain circuits that underlie our mindsets are highly malleable. There are even techniques that can shift these brain circuits. So I wouldn?t say we are born to be optimistic or pessimistic and never change -I think we are born with certain tendencies to react in certain ways. For instance, some people go through all sorts of things and just seem to bounce back. So these fundamental differences do seem to lead to fundamental differences in resilience.

What kind of evidence is there for this idea?
One bias we can study in the lab is attention bias. We use a computer and flash up a pair of images, for example a snake and a rabbit - one is a threat and one is not. After the images flash up - just for 20 milliseconds so people aren?t consciously aware of what the pictures are - they have to press a button when they see a target on the screen. After about 1000 of these trials, you find slight differences in reaction speed. Negative people tend to report the target faster if it comes up on the same side as the negative image, suggesting they paid more attention to it. At the end of the session we present them with a test, and the research finds that people who have a negative bias tend to show a stronger stress response than people who have a positive bias.

What?s so good about being optimistic anyway?
The research shows that, as long as they are realists too, people who have an optimistic mindset and feel like they are able to cope when things do go wrong benefit in all sorts of ways. The evidence is also quite strong now that an optimistic mindset is beneficial for our health. People with optimistic mindsets are also more successful in business, and seem to live longer.

Could it not be that people who are successful and healthy are more optimistic? Presumably there are lots of people who failed in business even though they were optimistic but aren?t around to tell the tale?
Lab based research does show that optimistic people are more persistent. In one study, people were rated on their level of pessimism or optimism and then were given anagrams to do, some of which were impossible. People who were optimistic stayed significantly longer trying to do the impossible anagrams - so they didn?t give up - that?s good experimental evidence.

So is a pessimist like me just doomed to failure?
No. One of the things I?ve been researching are cognitive bias modification procedures - experimental techniques where we use computers to induce different biases in people in the lab. You can take somebody with a neutral bias and then induce either a positive or negative bias temporarily, and we can see that that actually changes people?s emotional vulnerability. That demonstrates that these biases are playing a causal role in both vulnerability and in resilience. And training people to zone in on the positive or negative images over time can shift these biases.

So you can train your brain to be more optimistic?
Yes - and that?s the kind of research we?re doing now. We need to get a lot more information but one of the nice things about these techniques is that they can be implemented over the internet or even on smart phones. There was a big study in Harvard recently where people used smart phones for a few minutes a day to train these biases. The early research is very encouraging in suggesting that these techniques shift people's mindsets in a fundamental way that should lead to positive changes.

Birth Control Options With Femodene ED

Many sexually active couples know they are not ready for parenthood, and this is why contraception is so beneficial for people. There are numerous contraceptive options available, with the most popular type being combined oral contraception. An example of a combined oral contraceptive is Femodene ED, which contains the artificial versions of the female hormones oestrogen (ethinylestradiol) and progestogen (gestodene). Combined oral contraceptives like Femodene ED work by influencing the normal menstrual cycle.

Femodene ED pills prevent you from falling pregnant by modifying the reproductive system in three unique ways. They cause the thickening of the mucus at the neck of the cervix in order to make it difficult for a sperm to enter the womb and fertilise an egg. Femodene ED also stops ovulation due to which the release of an egg by the fallopian tubes is prevented, which means there would be no egg to get fertilised by sperm.

Finally, it cause the thinning of the uterine lining, meaning that even if an egg gets fertilised accidentally it won't be able to implant itself in the womb and grow there and thus you cannot conceive.

Birth control pills like this one are very convenient to use and allow you greater freedom than some other contraceptive methods. Femodene ED also offers you additional benefits such as regulating your periods and reducing heavy and painful periods and other discomforting symptoms related to PMS. This pill should be taken once a day for 21 days, followed by a break of seven days during which you are most likely to experience a withdrawal bleed. You will be completely protected even during this pill-free break of seven days.

If you forget to take one or two pills then you will still be protected, provided you take the last pill you missed and continue using the pack as normal. If you miss three or more birth control pills then the medication will no longer be effective. You would be asked to use a barrier contraceptive for the next seven days. You should completely avoid this medication if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or suffering from blood, heart or circulatory issues. If you have problems related to migraines or decreased liver function you should not take this pill. There are several other health complications that could stop you from using this oral contraceptive.

You should discuss your present and past medical history with your doctor or medical professional before purchasing this contraceptive. As expected from prescription medication, this birth control pill may also cause some mild side effects that should pass away as your body gets used to the flow of artificial hormones. The common side effects are nausea, headache, vomiting, weight gain, thrush, breakthrough bleeding, low sex drive and fluid retention. You can buy this medication through numerous registered online pharmacies after completing a confidential online consultation with a licensed doctor.

Library planned on West Colfax property | Inside Real Estate News

Denver Public Library to be built on West Colfax

The City and County of Denver has paid $985,000 to the Urban Land Conservancy for land at West Colfax Avenue and Irving Street in order to begin construction of the long-anticipated Denver Public Library branch in West Denver.

The library parcel, located at a site known as Mile High Vista, is a 0.86-acre portion of the two-acre area purchased by ULC in March 2011 using Denver?s Transit-Oriented Development Fund. The purchase is part of a long-term collaboration between the city and the ULC.

The TOD Fund was set up specifically for acquiring land near existing or future light rail stops and/or near high frequency bus routes for the preservation and creation of affordable housing and community assets. Mile High Vista is located within a quarter-mile of both the Knox and the Federal/Decatur light rail stations, scheduled to open in 2013.

ULC purchased Mile High Vista with the long-term goal of providing a site for a much-needed library on Denver?s west side, as well as developing workforce housing and affordable commercial space.

In addition to the $985,000, purchase price, the city will pay a proportionate share of the infrastructure costs on the land.

The money will be used to pay down the TOD Fund, making these funds available to revolve into other Denver-based TOD projects. The purchase of the land and construction of the new branch library is made possible by the Denver?s voter-approved Better Denver Bond Program.

Community benefit

All of these development goals align with ULC?s mission to use real estate as a tool for community benefit. The location near light rail further aligns with goals to ensure that affordable and mixed-income housing near transit is available to improve the health and the quality of life for residents in metro Denver. In addition, a Mi Pueblo grocery is planned for property adjacent to Mile High Vista and is expected to open in the next few months.

?The new library will be a great example of how nonprofits can successfully partner with local government to accomplish more for communities,? said ULC?s CEO and president, Aaron Miripol. ?We are thrilled to be a part of this catalytic development and new economic driver for the West Colfax area.?

I n 2011, the Denver Public Library and its architect, Studiotrope Design Collective, held three community meetings to gather input on the function and design of the new branch library expected to break ground in summer 2012.

?We are very excited about opening a new branch library in this area,? said city librarian, Shirley Amore. ?The community has been amazing with helping us design and envision a place where people of all ages will be able to gather, learn, create, and share ideas.?

ULC recently sold another portion of Mile High Vista to Del Norte Neighborhood Development Corp., a nonprofit organization that develops and manages workforce housing. Del Norte purchased 0.84 acres for the construction of a 60-unit workforce housing development as well as affordable commercial space for a daycare and nonprofit offices. ULC will develop a commercial building at Mile High Vista once the library and housing components are constructed.

ULC is a nonprofit organization established in 2003 that preserves real estate for community benefit. In addition to Mile High Vista, ULC has made 15 real estate investments and currently owns 12 properties in the Denver area, including nonprofit centers, community centers and affordable housing developments.

Vatican says trust in Church hurt by scandal

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican, engulfed in the worst crisis in Pope Benedict's papacy, on Monday denied Italian media reports that cardinals were suspects in an investigation into leaks of sensitive documents that led to the arrest of the pope's butler.

But while denying the reports, which said the butler was merely a courier in a behind-the-scenes struggle for power in the Holy See, the Vatican acknowledged that the often sordid affair would test the faith of Catholics in their Church.

The scandal exploded last week when - within a few days - the head of the Vatican's own bank was abruptly dismissed, the butler was arrested over leaks and a book was published alleging conspiracies among cardinals, the "princes of the Church".

Documents leaked to journalists allege corruption in the Church's vast financial dealings with Italian business.

Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi told a news conference: "This is naturally something that can hurt the Church, and put trust in it and the Holy See to the test."

Italian newspapers, quoting other whistle blowers in the Vatican, said the arrested butler was merely a scapegoat doing the bidding of more powerful figures, punished because the Church did not dare implicate cardinals behind the leaks.

"There are leakers among the cardinals but the Secretariat of State could not say that, so they arrested the servant, Paolo, who was only delivering letters on behalf of others," La Repubblica quoted one leaker as saying.

The Secretariat of State is run by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the pope's powerful right-hand man, and the scandal appears to involve a struggle between his allies and enemies, reminiscent of Renaissance conspiracies inside the Vatican.

It has been brewing for months, but since it burst into the open it has shaken the very heart of the Roman Catholic Church.

La Stampa daily quoted one of the alleged leakers as saying their goal was to help the pope root out corruption.

After an investigation inside the Holy See, the butler, Paolo Gabriele, 46, was charged on Saturday with stealing confidential papal documents. Leakers quoted by La Stampa, La Repubblica and other media said the leaking plot went much wider and higher.

Lombardi denied that any cardinal was being investigated for leaks. "I categorically deny that any cardinal, Italian or otherwise, is a suspect," Lombardi said.

The pope was being kept fully informed of the case, Lombardi said: "He continues on his path of serenity, his position of faith and morals that is above the fray."

BUTLER TO COOPERATE

One of Gabriele's two lawyers, Carlo Fusco, said his client, who is being held inside a Vatican police station, would cooperate fully with investigators who are trying to track down other suspects.

He said Gabriele, who attended mass on Monday morning and was visited by his wife, was "very serene and tranquil."

Critics of the pope say a lack of strong leadership has opened the door to infighting among his powerful aides - and potentially to the corruption alleged in the leaked documents.

Many Vatican insiders believe the butler, who had access to the pope's private apartment, could not have acted alone. He is being held in a "safe room" in the Vatican police station and has been charged with aggravated theft.

Now known in Vatican statements as "the defendant" - he was until Wednesday night the quiet man who served the pope's meals, helped him dress and held his umbrella on rainy days.

"I think this is a very serious moment it is a grave crisis because it has to do with the breach of trust in the inner circle of the Vatican," said Robert Moynihan," editor of the magazine Inside the Vatican.

"The pope cannot be sure that a document at his own desk isn't going to be taken and photocopied. It seems that the person taking those documents has been discovered but there is a general feeling that this represents more than that, that there is someone else behind it," Moynihan told Reuters television.

But Gianluigi Nuzzi, the Italian journalist who has received many of the documents over recent months and last week published his book "His Holiness", criticised the focus on rounding up leakers, rather than rooting out the corruption they expose.

"Surely, arresting someone and rounding up people and treating them like delinquents to stop them from passing on true information to newspapers would cause an uproar in other countries," he said. "There would be a petition to free them."

WEED OUT CORRUPTION

While news of the butler's arrest has filled newspapers in Italy and beyond, the Vatican's own newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, has ignored the story. Some say this may be because the paper itself has been an instrument in the power struggle between Bertone's allies and foes.

The Vatican's announcement of the arrest of the butler came a day after the president of the Vatican bank, Italian Ettore Gotti Tedeschi, was fired after a no confidence vote by its board of external financial experts, who come from Germany, Spain, the United States and Italy.

Gotti Tedeschi's ousting was a blow to Bertone, who as secretary of state was instrumental in bringing him in from Spain's Banco Santander to run the Vatican bank in 2009.

The Vatican bank, officially known as the Institute for the Works of Religion (IOR), was set up during World War II to manage the accounts of Vatican agencies, church organisations, bishops and religious orders.

It has been involved in financial scandals - most notably in 1982 when its then-president, Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, was indicted over the collapse of what was then Italy's largest private bank, Banco Ambrosiano, with more than a billion dollars in debts. Banco Ambrosiano's chairman Roberto Calvi was found hanged under London's Blackfriar's Bridge in 1984.

In September 2010, Italian investigators froze millions of euros in funds in Italian banks after opening a probe into money laundering involving IOR accounts, which the bank denies.

The Vatican is trying to make the IOR more transparent and join an international "white list" of countries that comply with international safeguards against money laundering and fraud. A decision is expected within months.

Documents leaked over the last few months included letters by an archbishop who was transferred to Washington by Bertone after blowing the whistle on what he saw as a web of corruption in a memo that put a number of cardinals in a bad light. Other documents alleged internal conflicts over the Vatican bank.

"I feel very sad for the pope. This whole thing is such a disservice to the Church," said Carl Anderson, head of the Knights of Columbus charity group and a member of the board of the Vatican bank who voted to fire Gotti Tedeschi.

Anderson told Reuters Gotti Tedeschi was sacked because of "a fundamental failure to perform his basic responsibilities". Gotti Tedeschi has said he was ousted because he wanted the bank to be more transparent, but Anderson rejected that assertion.

"Categorically, this action by the board had nothing to do with his promotion of transparency," Anderson said. "In fact, he was becoming an obstacle to greater transparency by his inability to work with senior management."

HBT: Prosecutors (finally) rest in Clemens case

After seven weeks of the prosecution case in chief, the government has rested. ?Also two minor counts against Roger Clemens have been dismissed.

The dropped counts relate to individual things he said such as him having ?no idea? that George Mitchell wanted to talk to him. The dismissal was likely because the government didn?t put on evidence relating to those counts. ?He remains charged with two counts of perjury and three counts of making false statements before Congress, along with 13 other acts constituting obstruction of justice. For all practical purposes the case remains the same.

Oh, and shockingly, the judge denied Clemens? motion today to have the case dismissed. Hey, was worth a try.

Time for the defense case. It is not likely to take anywhere near as long given that one tends not to put on a ton of evidence establishing that one did not do something.
